On a Toyota, service history beats the odometer
The instinct on any used car is to shop the mileage number first. On a Toyota that instinct is close to backwards. A 110,000-mile Camry with documented oil changes and a timing service on record is a materially better buy than an 80,000-mile car with an unexplained gap in its history — these engines routinely run past 200,000 miles when maintained and fail early when they are not.
So read the service records on the free Carfax report attached to every listing, not just the odometer. It is the more useful number.
The Lowcountry variables: salt and water
Reliability does not protect a car from its environment. Vehicles that have lived near the water in Charleston County corrode underneath faster than inland cars — brake lines, fuel lines, exhaust hangers, suspension hardware — and a mechanically perfect Toyota can still have a rusted-through brake line.
